President Biden's Mandates & COVID-19 Surges Impacting Businesses & Hospitals On Delmarva

DELAWARE/MARYLAND- Six new rules were ordered by President Biden Thursday night in an effort to mitigate COVID-19 cases.

The first rule was that employees of companies that have 100 or more workers will need to be vaccinated or show a negative test weekly.

In Sussex County, SoDel concepts has put an emphasis on vaccines by hosting clinics in the past for restaurant workers. President Scott Kammerer says those events may need to return depending on if the emergency regulation is enacted.

"I think this is just another obstacle and hurdle and that we're all for safety and the support for everyone in the industry and everyone that comes to eat in the restaurants," Kammerer said. "And business has been so good. I mean all of the restaurants are so up in sales."

TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury is temporarily pausing non-emergency surgeries. Medical Staff President Dr. Mark Edney says this is due to reasons related to unvaccinated people.

"This COVID surge which is largely resulting in unvaccinated COVID patients needing to be admitted to the hospital for care, both through the emergency rooms and up to the hospital floors and ICU's is further putting pressure on capacity constraints," Dr. Edney said.

Also, the hospital is facing a shortage of nurses which is making it difficult to take care of all of the patients. Dr. Edney says the latest surge could have even more effects down the line.

"From a hospital perspective, unvaccinated people are presenting for care because they are getting sick with the virus and its causing all of these secondary effects and delays," Dr. Edney said.

What President Biden called the pandemic of the unvaccinated is already taking its toll on the peninsula.
