SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.-Â Since 2004, Surf Bagel has been serving the community and its visitors. Its famous bagels and food have been offered at its second location in Rehoboth Beach since 2016.
Owner David Vitella and his family are ready to move on from the business and feel SoDel Concepts was the right owner to take it over.
"All of the restaurants are successful and when we kind of sat down at the table, the question was are you going to take care of my staff and he’s been nothing but great about it," Vitella said.
President of SoDel Concepts Scott Kammerer coached little league with Vitella and have known each other since their kids were young. He says that the existing Surf Bagels are just the beginning of what could come.
"I see for sure that I think we can do five Surf Bagels," Kammerer said. "I think that would be a great number to see where we are and really restaurants tend to take on a life on their own."
SoDel will be keeping all of the staff and menu items in place for now. Tom Devaney of Milton agrees that they should stay.
"It’s big in the community. A lot of people come here," Devaney said. "I don’t feel it needs to change. Maybe they change things in the future for the better. We’ll see."
For Lexi Leskovac of Lewes, she remembers times when she would come to Surf Bagel after sports practices with teammates.
"I think it’s definitely like a traditional place here in Delaware," Leskovac said. "A lot of people like coming here and we just hope they keep the novelty of it."
The sale will be finalized on December 1 but at least over the next six months to a year all changes will be behind the scenes rather than at the front of the house.
