SEAFORD, Del.- On the go and ready to vaccinate.
The Delaware Division of Public Health's (DPH) mobile trailer is hitting communities with low vaccination rates. On Thursday in Seaford, people were able to walk right up and get a shot.
DPH Director of Community Services Lisa Henry says many people are reluctant to get COVID-19 shots and wants that hesitancy or uneasiness to not be there. The only way to do that is to educate the public.
"What we want to try to do is build vaccine confidence and provide that correct information and educate people so they will know the right information not the misinformation in hopes that will provide that informed decision-making and that will push them from a maybe to a yes," Henry said.
DPH is not just offering COVID-19 vaccines but also the flu vaccine. Loretta G. Williams of Seaford received both her booster and a flu shot and she had no reason to hesitate coming to the trailer to get them.
"It just gives me more confidence in being out in public," Williams said. "I've avoided so much in the last 18 or 19 months and this just makes me feel like even if I come in contact with someone, I'm not likely to get the virus."
DPH says the chain of conversations about what is and is not correct about the vaccines will hopefully help get more shots into more arms.
"We are partnering with other community groups to provide more outreach to have the individual conversations with people so if they don't want to have it with a pharmacist but they want to have it with a trusted community member, we've been working with trusted community members to get more outreach," Henry said.
The trailer is on the move and could be coming to a city near you soon. The next stops for the mobile trailer will be on Monday in Georgetown at First State Community Action Agency from 10 a.m. to Noon and at Laurel Junction from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
