Concept plans suggest extending and widening the roadway to add a second sidewalk and parking lane.

BETHANY BEACH, Del. - A newly released traffic engineering and design report is driving discussions about pedestrian and cyclist safety in Bethany Beach, particularly as the coastal town prepares for another busy summer season.

The more than 400-page report, prepared by The Traffic Group for Bethany Beach, highlights several areas for potential improvement. One major focus is North Pennsylvania Avenue near First and Second streets. Concept plans suggest extending and widening the roadway to add a second sidewalk and parking lane.

Bikes in Bethany

The more than 400-page report, prepared by The Traffic Group for Bethany Beach, highlights several areas for potential improvement.

"I think it’s fine how it is," said resident Stephanie Sheldon. "It’s been this way for many years. I don’t think there’s been too much trouble."

Frequent cyclist Pat Cookston supports the idea of change. "What I’d like to have is just designated bike lanes on both sides of the road, especially the main roads," she said.

No decisions have been made regarding implementation.
