LONG NECK, Del.- A fire in Long Neck has severely damaged a home Wednesday night.
A little before 7 p.m., Indian River firefighters responded to a call of a home on fire in the Pine Woods neighborhood off of route 24 and Long Neck road.
"We went into the bathroom and the back corner of the room," said Indian River Fire Company lieutenant Jacob Klingler, who was also the first firefighter in the house. "The fire was peeking through the roof and it started to get really, really hot
Firefighters believe the fire began on a gas powered grill in the homeowner's backyard. The flames traveled up the house and into the attic of the home.
It took a little over half an hour to get the fire under control. Multiple different fire companies responded to the scene.
"Indian River fire company has been assisted Millsboro Fire Company and Lewes Fire Company," said Indian River public information officer Patrick Miller. "All the personnel were on scene assisting with this incident as well."
Firefighters say the house was owned by an elderly man who lived alone. No one was in the house when firefighters went in to put out the flames. Firefighters say multiple people were treated for smoke inhalation- but all refused any more medical assistance afterwards.
