GEORGETOWN, Del. - Delaware Legislators recognized May as Community Action Month, with Georgetown's First State Community Action Agency in attendance.Ā

On Thursday, May 22, Delaware Senators and Delaware House of Representatives made an official proclamation recognizing May as Community Action Month.

In attendance at Legislative Hall that day was Bernice Edwards, Executive Director of First State Community Action Agency in Georgetown.Ā

In a Facebook post made by FSCAA on Friday, May 23, the agency says "this proclamation holds immense significance as May is dedicated to recognizing the vital work of community action agencies nationwide. It was particularly meaningful as yesterday also marked our annual Legislative Advocacy Day!"

The post continues, "Our dedicated team had the privilege of visiting Legislative Hall in Dover to showcase the impactful work we've done over the past year, share the outcomes that are transforming lives in our communities and advocate directly for the critical needs of the individuals and families we serve across the entire state."

Linwood Pitts showed CoastTVĀ  what happens when you come to First State Community Action Agency's food pantry in Georgetown.

Pitts works as a maintenance man and helps with the food pantry but his journey to get here was not easy.

"I was homeless. I was staying at the pallet village. Then, I worked my way from there to a better place," Pitts shared.

FSCAA's Executive Director, Bernice Edwards, says community action is all about giving people a hand up, not a hand out.

"If you teach a person with the necessary skills, we know that they can move on to the next level, and that's what we do. Our programs extend from youth programs to senior programs," Edwards explained.

As Community Action Month comes to a close, Edwards says there's one more thing she would really like to focus on in the future.Ā

"I want to see what we can do for the kids with the communities that we work in because we do a lot of prevention. We want to make sure that our kids get a fair chance."
