LEWES, Del. - In an effort to address the lack of housing in Lewes, the housing committee is set to convene early next year. The focal point of this meeting will be a discussion on Accessory Dwelling Units, a term used to describe secondary housing structures located on residential properties. These units, which can take the form of apartments over garages or basement apartments, have gained popularity as a potential solution to the growing demand for affordable housing in the area.
Earlier this year, the city’s planning commission met to discuss some of the rules for these potential ADUs. Back in November, the commission agreed on a set price range of $800 to $1200 dollars a month in the hopes of keeping the units affordable. Also, requiring two parking spaces to be able to build an ADU. However, what the commission could not agree on is the minimum length of the lease or whether or not to have an inspector review the properties in between tenants.
The housing committee will meet Jan. 3 at 4 p.m. in Lewes City Hall.
