GEORGETOWN, Del. - High school math teacher Megan Stevens has been named the 2026 Sussex Academy Teacher of the Year.

Stevens joined Sussex Academy in 2022. “I just love what I do, and to be recognized for that is really special,” said Stevens.

Head of School Kyle Bentley said the school was proud to nominate her for the Delaware Charter Schools Network Teacher of the Year Award. “I have been consistently impressed by her leadership, her teaching in the classroom, and her understanding of the importance of building strong relationships throughout the school,” Bentley said. “She is an excellent example of the high-quality educators at our school.”

Stevens previously taught geometry and algebra in central Florida for 11 years before relocating to Delaware. At Sussex Academy, she now serves as the high school math department coordinator.

“Math doesn’t tend to be a student’s favorite subject, but I love to break that barrier and really try and explain the content on a student level and allow students to see the content for what it is." said Stevens.

Stevens holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education mathematics from Kutztown University and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Western Governors University.

Education is a family affair in the Stevens household. Her husband, Sam, is a teacher in the Woodbridge School District. Their youngest child, Keegan, attends daycare, while older children Lucas and Cooper attend Sussex Academy Elementary.

Stevens will now compete for the Delaware Charter Schools Network Teacher of the Year award, with the winner advancing to the statewide Delaware Teacher of the Year contest. She succeeds her colleague Stephanie Sherman, who held both the Sussex Academy and DCSN Teacher of the Year titles in 2024.
