Route 24 and Legion Road Intersection

LONG NECK, Del. - Millsboro and Long Neck area locals showed up to a public meeting at American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro to address safety concern at the intersection of Route 24 and Legion Road.

The Town Hall took place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Jon Derryberry, a DelDOT engineer, was there to share parts of a traffic study that is still in draft format.

Bob Verdugo, a local, says turning onto either road is dangerous and nearly impossible.

"It's important to actually see what's happening, not just look at data points which talk about traffic counts and, you know, information like that," said Verdugo.

Verdugo says he and many others share the fear of being rear ended while waiting to turn on to Legion Road.

He says they also share the frustration of waiting 10 minutes to pull out on to Route 24.

Dawn Russo says she's dealing with two times the anxiety, not only as a driver but as a bicyclist.Ā

"I have not ridden my bike on Route 24 because it makes me nervous. I don't feel that there's enough space on the side of the roads to accommodate the turning traffic at all of the intersections," Russo shared.

During Thursday's discussion many people suggested three possible solutions.

Many of the people who spoke suggested what they believe could be possible solutions to what they call a dangerous intersection.

  1. Better timing of the two traffic lights already set up.
  2. Reduced speed
  3. A turn lane for Westbound traffic

DelDOT engineer, Jon DerryBerry, says these recommendations will now be taken under consideration.

"We completed a traffic signal justification study at the intersection of SR 24 and Legion Road. It's still in draft format," Derryberry explained.

He says he came to present some of the crash information, volume information and speed information DelDOT has collected so far.

However, Derryberry says "access management is a great tool to restrict the left turning movements. It's a safer other alternative," he continued.

Derryberry says DelDOT will continue to work closely with Rep. Hilovsky, who represents that area, to reach feasible solutions that will make the intersection safer for all.
