MILTON, Del. - Milton Planning and Zoning will continue to review a report from the Affordable Housing ADHOC Committee, discussing their eight recommendations to the Mayor and Town Council. The Planning and Zoning work session is at the Milton Library on March 28 at 1 p.m.
The advisory report says the need for affordable or workforce housing in Milton is real and growing.
"Proximity to the beach and low real estate taxes have attracted higher income households, retirees, and a growing seasonal use of our available housing stock," says the report.
The report indicates that there are no incentives for developers to build affordable or workforce housing in the area.
There are 55 empty buildable lots in Milton, excluding residential developments, according to the report.
"Construction of Affordable/Workforce infill houses on these lots would combine the luxury of a new home with the comfort of an older, established neighborhood," says the advisory report. "And the town would benefit from better neighborhoods and increased property tax valuations."
Some people who live in Milton, like Fred DeRosa, feel like you have to start from scratch.
"There is no affordable housing anymore," said DeRosa. "They're doing too much building. They are out of their minds. They've got to stop it. It's overcrowded."
Milton local Dora DiDomenico wants to see a solution that finds the best of both worlds.Â
"We need something more affordable, but we don't have to do it at the cost of our farmlands and our woodlands," said DiDomenico.
