Milton signs resolution to form Affordable/Workforce Housing Ad Hoc Committee

MILTON, Del.- The town of Milton is taking steps to fix affordable housing issues.

A resolution was signed to form a Affordable/Workforce Initiative Ad Hoc Committee, which will review possible options to address a lack of affordable places to live.

"We're not talking about subsidized housing, which is what most people jump to the conclusion of," said Milton Mayor John Collier. "We're talking about the ability for people who don't make huge salaries and don't have huge incomes to have a place to live."

Collier continued to say that the issue of a lack of cheap housing is not an issue unique to Milton, but rather the entire country.

The committee is made up of town officials from the council and the Planning and Zoning committee and Milton neighbors- who Collier says are qualified to be on this committee.

"I deal with people every day in this town, and when folks who have lived here for many, many years look at their lifetimes, they raise their families, they send their kids off to school to get an education. They want to come home and they want to have a good job and they want to be able to afford to live. And they're finding that, even if they can find a decent job, they can't find a place to live that they can afford," said Collier.

Collier added that the goal is for affordable housing options to be inclusive, and that addressing this issue is vital to the town as it grows.

Any suggestions or solutions made by the committee will have to go through the Planning and Zoning commission and the town council. There has been no meetings at this time, but the committee will be meeting throughout the new year.
