REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - People walking the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk Friday saw a sea of orange as volunteers with Moms Demand Action hosted an event aimed at raising awareness and remembering lives lost to gun violence.
The gathering featured music, guest speakers and a memory board displaying photos and names of survivors and loved ones affected by gun violence. One participant was Sherrie Walker, a local who lost her grandson.
“No family should have to go through this just because people can get guns so easily in this country,” said Walker. “It’s a loss to our family, to many friends of a wonderful young man.”
Walker's grandson's death fuels her advocacy for stronger gun safety laws.
According to Moms Demand Action, an average of 123 people die from gun injuries each year in Delaware. The group also says public awareness and education are crucial in preventing future tragedies.
The event was one of many across the country held as part of the organization’s ongoing campaign to end gun violence. Volunteers handed out educational materials and spoke with locals about what they can do to prevent a gun related accident.
