Potential parking changes to Deauville Beach

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -  Rehoboth Beach City Officials decided to move forward with the possibility of changing the parking system at Deauville Beach. According to the city, back in 2019, a code was changed to allow any permit to be accepted at Deauville Beach. Commissioners are weighing the options of getting rid of the permits there all together, and making the lot a meter parking zone only. During the busy season, the Rehoboth Beach Parking Department says cars wait on the shoulder of the road leading up to the lot, to purchase a permit or get it checked. The department says this is not only an issue of efficiency, but it as also a safety issue for pedestrians and bicyclists.

"We recommended to the city commissioners to change the parking permit system for Deauville Beach because of the traffic that can back up on Henlopen Avenue and Surf Avenue, or Columbia," explained June Embert, supervisor for the Rehoboth Beach Parking Department. "Currently, the attendant has to stop all of the vehicles before they come into the lot, check or sell them a parking permit, and then they can come in to park," said Embert."

One local who visits the area often during the summer, is not in favor of the change because she believes both meters and permits should be accepted.

"It's very disappointing because the permit is very expensive, and if you already have one and are not going to be able to use it, what's the point of having a permit" said Stephanie Price.

According to the parking department, if commissioners vote to change the rule and make the lot a meter only zone, the price to park would be three dollars an hour, so it matches the price for the rest of the city. The parking department says its goal is to update the parking lot so it is compatible with the current parking technology used in Rehoboth Beach, like the Park Mobile App.
