BISHOPVILLE, Md. - A rabid raccoon has been confirmed in the area of St. Martin’s Neck Road in Bishopville, prompting a public health advisory from the Worcester County Health Department.

The department urges people who live nearby to take extra precautions after potential contact between the raccoon and people or pets. The health department warns that any bites, scratches, or other direct contact with the animal must be reported immediately by calling the Office of Environmental Health at 410-352-3234.

Authorities are also advising people to report any sick or unusually behaving animals, as additional rabid wildlife may be in the area. The advisory emphasizes avoiding interaction with wild animals and contacting Animal Control or the local sheriff’s office if any are seen acting abnormally.

The department reminds people to ensure that all pets, especially those kept outdoors, are up to date on rabies vaccinations. Pets should not be allowed to roam freely, and food should not be left outdoors, as it could attract wild or stray animals.
