REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - Rehoboth Avenue was supposed to start being repaved earlier this fall. The project is currently on hold. According to DelDOT, the project was put on pause to ensure that all plans met the Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines. While Rehoboth Avenue does not look like it is in bad condition, DelDOT says it has not been paved since 2005.
Charles "C.R." McLeod, Director of Communications for DelDOT explained, "We don't want it to continue to deteriorate to a point where is it causing an issue for vehicles and bicyclists, so that's why we are planning to repair the street soon."
Business owners on Rehoboth Avenue, are okay with the project being delayed, since the Fall is still a busy time for shoppers.
Chad Miller, owner of Pet Wants, located on Rehoboth Avenue said, "Once we get through Sea Witch, it seems like it slows down here on the avenue in November and December, so those months would be ideal for the project."
Thomas Newhart, co-owns Atlantique, also located on Rehoboth Avenue. Newhart worries about how business could be affected by construction, but he commends the city for staying on top of repairs.
"I've noticed how they do try to keep up with keeping the city clean and repairing it all the time," stated Newhart.
DelDOT says they are working with the city to make sure the project benefits everyone on Rehoboth Avenue. Once the City of Rehoboth and DelDOT come up with a new plan for the project, a date as to when the re-pavement project will begin will be released.
