Rehoboth Beach, DE— The AARP named Rehoboth Beach as a "Dream Town" to retire in. For families in the Delmarva area looking to retire, many have decided to move to Delaware beaches.
One resident of The Lodge Truitt Homestead in Rehoboth Beach says the lower cost of living is a big attraction to Delaware.
"A number of people, particularly in the neighboring states where the cost of living is so high. Someone in Delaware's history had the foresight to have a low-incorporation tax, and so therefore, we don't have a sales tax here," Nancy Hanna said.
Earlier this month, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan explained why families are finding it more difficult to retire.
"I still hear nearly everyday, from folks who say to me, they love the state of Maryland, they've spent their whole life here, they don't want to leave their kids and grand kids, but that they can't afford to retire here in Maryland," Governor Hogan said.
Retirees are choosing to move to nearby states, such as Delaware.
"It is such a demand for retirement living here, because of the mild climate, the tax situation that we have.
And so people really like that, not to mention, we're 2 miles from the boardwalk," Suzette Chambers, community director of The Lodge Truitt Homestead, said.
Another reason to retire in Rehoboth Beach has to do with the community, one lodge member says.
"One of the best reasons to live here is for the people. Without a doubt. They're wonderful. Everyone has their own distinctive personality, but they come here to have a good time."
