REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - Rehoboth Beach Commissioners met on Friday, December 15th at the Mayors and Commissioners meeting to discuss a few parking topics. One of the topics was an ordinance for a one-time fee reduction for certain parking violations. This was proposed by the parking department because a common problem this past summer was drivers entering the wrong license plate number or selecting the wrong car in the park mobile app.
Joy Lynn, who works at a store in Downtown Rehoboth Beach says she sees visitors confused about the parking app, and some grace for people who accidently use the app incorrectly the first time is the right thing to do.
"I think that's a positive thing, it would be good for business all around because other areas would be charging full price for their tickets, but we would give people some leeway if they make a first time mistake," explained Lynn.
The city agreed to move forward with an ordinance to reduce the fee one time if someone puts in the wrong car or license plate number into the Park Mobile app. Some commissioners in the meeting agree they have even made mistakes with the app.
Meanwhile, some people in Rehoboth believe certain parking violations should have increased fees to stop people from taking advantage.
"Well I do see the loading zones and the 30 minute zones completely overrun by people abusing those spaces so maybe higher fines for that might be a deterrent for that behavior" said Beth Dean, an employee at Pink Turtle.
The city said the ordinance is its effort to give honest people the benefit of the doubt.
