SOUTH BETHANY, Del. — South Bethany homeowners can expect changes to their property tax bills this year — and for many, that change will mean paying more.
While the town technically lowered its property tax rate from $1.30 per $100 of assessed value to $0.051, Sussex County’s recent property reassessment means most homeowners will see an increase. Town officials estimate the majority of property owners will owe between $100 and $500 more on their tax bills.
According to a town budget presentation, 105 properties will actually see a reduction. 106 properties will pay more than $500 more. About 333 properties will pay less than $100 more. The largest category is the aforementioned $100-500 more, which applies to 861 properties.
Town leaders noted this is South Bethany’s first property tax increase since 2009. With the new rate and reassessment, the town expects to collect roughly 50% more in tax revenue, which officials say will fund both operational costs and long-overdue capital projects.
The town’s rental tax will remain unchanged at 8%.
