SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - The Southern Delaware Orchestra, also known as SODELO, started an initiative to collect the community's old instruments and allow them to be borrowed by people who cannot afford to rent or buy them.
Donations are being accepted at the Lewes Public Library for instruments of all kinds, sizes, and conditions. The group is even fixing old broken instruments to loan.
SODELO says that most kids and even adults interested in music are deterred by the price tag.
"For many, it stops right there... 'I can't afford an instrument, therefore I cannot play and I cannot take lessons' and we would like to avoid those obstacles," said the Vice President of SODELO, Eva DelGallo, "Some people are meant to be musicians and that's where their heart is and to be able to pass that on is the biggest gift to me."
Even the Band Director at Mariner Middle School, Brian Mahoney, says anywhere from five to ten students will need this kind of assistance each year.
"It's one of the most diverse groups in the entire school whether it be ethnicities or socioeconomic backgrounds and having a program like that is super important in making sure all of these students can continue to participate." said Mahoney.
Donations of instruments and other musical equipment will be accepted at the Lewes Public Library until Nov. 15.
