LEWES, Del. - The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is seeking volunteers to help protect beach-nesting birds, including the threatened piping plover and the endangered American oystercatcher, along Delaware’s coast.
A training session, held by DNREC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife, for new participants will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on May 3 at the Officers Club Mess Hall in Cape Henlopen State Park.
Volunteers will be stationed near restricted nesting areas to explain the importance of the closures and how giving birds space helps ensure the success of their nesting season.
The training session will begin with refreshments and a slideshow presentation. Organizers will then provide an overview of the program and the responsibilities of volunteers. If weather permits, the session will conclude with a walk to the Point at Cape Henlopen to spot shorebirds. Binoculars will be provided, although attendees are encouraged to bring their own.
Those interested are encouraged to fill out an interest form ahead of time, but walk-ins are welcome and can complete the form later. DNREC says park entrance fees will be waived for those attending the training.
