INDIAN RIVER INLET, Del. - On Monday, Aug. 5, a pilot whale came ashore the north side of the Indian River Inlet.

The Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute (MERR) confirmed that the female whale had died after being rescued and was likely already dying when ashore. The whale was underweight when it was found, said MERR.

MERR said it will be performing a necropsy on the whale Aug. 6 to determine the official cause of death.
