If you notice smoky skies over Delaware in the coming weeks, it could be part of a planned effort to maintain local ecosystems. Prescribed burns are set to take place at Bombay Hook and Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuges. The burns will occur once a week at each refuge between March 17 and April 20.

Sharon Denny won Best in Show in the Friends of Prime Hook Wildlife Refuge Nature Photography Contest with her photo titled "Breakfast to Go," capturing a snowy egret in flight during a feeding frenzy. The contest showcased over 200 photographs from 38 photographers, with winners commended for their ability to evoke emotional responses and tell stories through their images.

Photographers can choose from categories based on age or subject like Delmarva scenery, native birds, plants and flowers, the beauty of Prime Hook, and more. Submissions will be judged by professional photographers and winners will be announced at a public reception. Some will receive cash prizes.

It is World Wetlands Day and DNREC and the Delaware Department of Agriculture (DDA) signed an agreement to protect unique wetlands across the state. Refuges like Prime Hook and the Center for Inland Bays work to improve local wetlands as storms and development pose a threat.
