An 18-year-old student at Parkside High School in Salisbury was taken into custody Thursday morning after a school resource officer found him with a 9 mm handgun and suspected marijuana. 

The Delaware Emergency Management Agency is working to keep schools safer for students and teachers. With that in mind, DEMA has launched the Delaware School Safety Center, which expands the state’s Comprehensive School Safety Program.

Officials say the course is designed to practice integrated responses during active shooter attacks. Delaware saw the nation’s highest student exposure rate between 2020 and 2024, with 359 per 100,000 students.

According to troopers, the victim was rushed to an area hospital by her parent, where she received treatment for serious injuries sustained to her head.
