DELAWARE - The coast has been seeing the first taste of winter over the past couple of days. Last night temperatures fell to around 20 degrees on parts of Delmarva. This makes last night the coldest night since early last February.
People in Lewes today were certainly feeling the chill. Many people walking along Second Street were bundled in thick winter coats, scarves, and gloves.
“I’ve got on the heaviest winter coat that I own.”, explained Iris Prager.
This first real taste of winter even brought along with it the first snowflakes of the season to parts of the region on Tuesday.
The first true blast of Arctic air and the first snowflakes of the season coincided perfectly with Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Delaware, which runs through Friday.
Winters on Delmarva can produce many hazards that people should prepare for.
“Awareness and preparedness can really dramatically increase your chances of recovery after a natural disaster.” explained John Petersen, the Community Relations Coordinator for DEMA.
Some hazards Delmarva faces during the winter include snow, ice, dangerous cold, and even coastal flooding. Coastal flooding is one hazard that tends to be ignored when it comes to the winter season, but it’s important to note that winter is also nor’easter season on Delmarva.
