SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Cold temperatures are making themselves known around Sussex County.
Code Purple shelters for the homeless open this coming Friday- but frigid temperatures before that day are leaving some to wonder where those without a home could go.
In Milford, Tom Chilton coordinates Code Purple at Avenue United Methodist Church. He says he wants to open up sooner- but he does not have the necessary manpower to do so.
"I'll be honest. It's sad," he said. "I don't have enough volunteers. I've got six overnight volunteers. I do need one more to cover the week."
The church can house up to thirteen men at a time. Women and children cannot go to Avenue United Methodist Church, but they can go to Milford Nazarene Church on the route 113 side of the city. You can read more about signing up to volunteer and the other locations here.
Over in Georgetown, dogs could be seen wearing sweaters to keep themselves warm.
The BVSPCA recommends dogs don't spend much time outside in the cold.
"You really shouldn't have them out for when it gets down into the 20s," said Laura Page with the BVSPCA. "They shouldn't be out for more than about 15 or 20 minutes. When it gets into the teens, for some dogs, 5 minutes is enough that they could go into hypothermia in 5 minutes."
Page said bundling your dog up and taking cats indoors is vital to keeping them happy and healthy.
