DELAWARE - Delaware locals are encouraged to share their connection to the state's seaside beauty for 'Ocean Month' to the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control for June.
DNREC is looking for these stories for their 'Voices of the Tide' to tell the history and importance of the coast to Delawareans to protect the rich marine ecosystem iconic to the state.
“Ocean lovers all have an ocean story,” said Kristi Lieske, Ocean Planner for the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Division of Climate, Coastal and Energy. “Whether it’s a childhood fascination with the creatures beneath the surface, the allure of unearthing buried treasure alongside a loved one or how your own livelihood has been shaped by the sea, all stories matter.”
DNREC says that as demand for space in the ocean increases for commercial shipping and cable laying, the coast is forced to adapt to changes in rising sea levels, warming waters, and acidification. They hope to balance the needs of how the ocean is used and preserving the natural beauty of the maritime area.
Submissions will be open until May 15 and stories will be gathered into a catalogue for public viewing. Stories will be submitted into a raffle to potentially win a DNREC prize pack. For more information and guidelines how to enter, locals can visit their website.
Stories will be shown throughout June on DNREC media and may be used for Delaware's Ocean and Bay Plan, a comprehensive guide to be given to stakeholders, decision makers, and the public to better understand the ocean's resources and how to protect marine life in the area.
