DEWEY BEACH, Del. - As the summer crowds roll into Dewey Beach, town officials are putting their foot down when it comes to jaywalking, and they’re making it clear: breaking the rules will cost you. Those caught jaywalking will face a $50 fine.
Dewey Beach has made some noticeable upgrades to its safety features. The town lowered the blinking crosswalk lights to make them easier to see, added more signage, and even set up a digital message board right at the entrance. The sign is hard to miss, warning pedestrians to use crosswalks and reminding them that jaywalking now comes with a fine.
Commissioner Paul Bauer made it clear that enforcement is the key to getting people to follow the rules. "We have to get compliance," he said. "The only way to do that is through enforcement. That’s the final step, making sure everyone knows it will be enforced."
For Bauer and other town officials, safety is the priority. "In a town like Dewey, especially with summer coming around and all the people, the goal is to make sure everyone is safe," he explained. "That’s why we’ve invested in all this infrastructure, to keep people safe from accidents happening in all directions."
With the busy summer season right around the corner, Dewey Beach is expecting plenty of foot traffic. Officials hope the new fines and increased enforcement will serve as a reminder to both locals and visitors to stay safe.
