HARRINGTON, Del. – For the 14th year in a row, Food Lion is set to host their "Food Lion Feeds Hunger Relief Day." The grocer will be collecting food donations that can earn people free entry at the Delaware State Fair on July 21st. To earn that free entry, it takes a donation of five Food Lion brand canned or boxed goods.
Once all the donations are collected, they will be sent to the Food Bank of Delaware. According to the Food Bank of Delaware, since 2012, around 250,000 pounds of food, equal to 300,000 meals, have been collected at the Delaware State Fair to help fight hunger.
Donations that are made this year will help families in Kent and Sussex counties who are struggling to put food on the table. According to the Food Bank, nearly 50,000 people in Kent and Sussex counties are considered food insecure.
“We are so grateful to partner with Food Lion for Hunger Relief Day at the Delaware State Fair,” said Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO Cathy Kanefsky. “This event brings our community together in such a meaningful way — turning a day at the fair into an opportunity to help neighbors in need. Every can of food makes a difference, and we’re inspired by the generosity we see year after year.”
“At Food Lion, we’re more than a grocery store; we nourish our neighbors,” said Food Lion Community Relations and Marketing Specialist Bob Mills. “Hunger Relief Day at the Delaware State Fair is a chance for all of us to give back, one can at a time. It’s incredible to see how a simple act of kindness can fill shelves and hearts.”
Volunteers from Food Lion and the Food Bank of Delaware will be on hand to accept donations at all fair gates. There are a few rules to follow; they will not accept any glass items. For those looking to make the biggest impact, the Food Bank of Delaware says they need these supplies the most:
- Canned fruits
- Canned vegetables
- Canned soups
- Tuna fish
- Peanut butter
- Cereal
- Pasta
