Under the terms, he will participate in the First Offender’s Program, which includes a one-year driver's license suspension, a $250 fine, completion of a DUI course and the installation of an Ignition Interlock Device once he is permitted to drive again.

MILFORD, Del. - A former Clayton Police Chief has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence following a drunk driving case in Milford, according to the Delaware Department of Justice.

Carl Hutson, 49, of Frederica, entered a plea agreement on April 14. Under the terms, he will participate in the First Offender’s Program, which includes a one-year driver's license suspension, a $250 fine, completion of a DUI course and the installation of an Ignition Interlock Device once he is permitted to drive again says the department.

The plea follows an investigation by the Milford Police Department. The charges stem from a Jan. 3, incident in which Hutson drove the wrong way on North Church Street in Milford. Police said Hutson failed field sobriety tests and recorded a 0.17 blood alcohol concentration on a breathalyzer.

"It is simply unacceptable for anyone, but anyone, to get behind the wheel of a car while under the influence of alcohol,” said Attorney General Kathy Jennings. “Drunk driving incidents, including by those who should frankly know better, are frighteningly commonplace and can have devastating, lifelong, or even fatal consequences. We are extremely lucky that no one was injured in this case and hope that treatment and accountability keep the defendant a one-time offender.”
