Green iguana

Green iguanas like this were given as prizes at the Apple Scrapple festival over the Oct. 14 weekend, according to the Delaware Department of Agriculture.

BRIDGEVILLE, Del. - Iguanas distributed as a prize by a vendor at the recent Apple Scrapple festival have raised concerns with the Delaware Department of Agriculture. Though the iguanas do not require permits, according to the department, they are considered exotic animals in the state and are not native.

"We are concerned because this is not a prize many people would look to win at a festival and we don't want individuals or families to feel that they have to keep an animal that they are not prepared to care for," said State Veterinarian Dr. Karen Lopez. "We absolutely do not want people releasing them into the wild."

The department says the iguanas could cause ecological harm and that Delaware's climate and vegetation are unsuitable for their overall health. Additionally, reptiles like iguanas can spread Salmonella and other types of bacteria that can make people sick. People who own or encounter reptiles are encouraged to take steps to stay healthy around these animals by:

  • Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water after touching them or cleaning their habitats.
  • Not eating or drinking around them or the areas in which they live.
  • Cleaning cages and terrariums outdoors.
  • Not kissing pets.
  • Taking pets to a veterinarian regularly.

There are several reptile rehabilitation and rescue groups that can care for the iguanas and rehome them to individuals who have experience raising and caring for them. Anyone who received a green iguana at the Apple Scrapple and no longer wants it is encouraged to contact the Poultry and Animal Health Section by calling 302-698-4500.
