LEWES, Del. — Gardeners and flower enthusiasts gathered early Saturday to take part in a beloved tradition: the Tulip Dig, signaling the conclusion of the 16th annual Lewes Tulip Celebration.

Organized by Lewes in Bloom, the event invited the community to bring their own shovels, trowels, baskets or bags to dig up tulips from the festival’s vibrant displays for free, beginning promptly at 8 a.m.

The festival, spanning three weekends, featured over 31,000 tulips and 5,000 other spring bulbs, planted at more than 20 locations throughout Lewes.

This year’s Lewes Tulip Celebration, held from April 1 to April 20, celebrated the city’s Dutch heritage and was jointly sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Lewes in Bloom. The festival, spanning three weekends, featured over 31,000 tulips and 5,000 other spring bulbs, planted at more than 20 locations throughout Lewes.
