LEWES, Del. - The Lewes Police Department arrested a Lincoln man after he led officers on a nighttime chase through a wooded area. The arrest began while police were monitoring the Jefferson Apartments following a previous shooting there.

Around 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 15, Lewes officers pulled over a vehicle on Route 1 just south of Dartmouth Road, near the Wawa. Police say the driver, later identified as 23-year-old Jefferson Ramirez-Rodriquez of Lincoln, was talking with police before he ran from the car into a nearby wooded area. While chasing him, officers say they saw him remove a black handgun from his waistband.

After losing sight of Ramirez-Rodriquez, Lewes officers requested assistance from Delaware State Police. Law enforcement established a perimeter and a Maryland State Police helicopter was brought in. Ramirez-Rodriquez was located using nighttime heat seeking technology and was taken into custody. Police say they found a Glock semi-automatic handgun and two loaded magazines nearby.

Ramirez-Rodriquez was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, tampering with physical evidence and resisting arrest. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution.
