DELMARVA - Communities across Delmarva are marking Memorial Day weekend with ceremonies, music and remembrance events. From quiet tributes to family-friendly festivals, here’s a look at what’s happening from Friday through Monday.
Milford
- Monday, May 26, brings a full slate of commemorations. In Milford, a public ceremony will be held at Milford High School at 10:30 a.m.
Georgetown
- In Georgetown, the Sussex County Memorial Day Service will begin at 1:30 p.m. at The Circle in the town center
Ellendale
- Ellendale’s ceremony, led by Dale Annis, will be held at 1 p.m. at the Ellendale War Memorial
Lewes
- Lewes will host its annual Veterans Tribute Parade, led by American Legion Post 17, beginning at 11 a.m. on Schley Avenue
Rehoboth Beach
- Rehoboth Beach will hold a traditional service led by Henlopen American Legion Post 5, featuring speakers, patriotic music, and a wreath-laying
Fenwick Island
- Fenwick Island will hold its Memorial Day ceremony at 5:30 p.m. in Town Park, with remarks from retired Navy Capt. Edmund Pinto, performances by local choirs, and a rendition of “Taps” by a sixth-grade student
Ocean City
- On Sunday, May 25, Ocean City will host its official Memorial Day ceremony at 1 p.m. at the Firefighters Memorial on the Boardwalk. Mayor Rick Meehan and Maj. Gen. Janeen Birckhead of the Maryland National Guard will speak. The event will include an A-10 flyover by the Maryland Air National Guard and music from the 229th Army National Guard Band, capped by a ceremonial wreath-laying
Berlin
- Events begin Friday, May 23, with a National Poppy Day event hosted by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 24 of Dagsboro, in partnership with The Snowball Stand in Berlin. The event runs from 2:45 to 7 p.m., offering poppy distribution and a portion of sales donated to support veterans
Ocean Pines
- In Ocean Pines, the region’s largest Memorial Day event will take place at 11 a.m. at the Worcester County Veterans Memorial, with retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Robert J. Rosales as keynote speaker and performances by Randy Lee Ashcraft, the Delmarva Chorus, and local students. In case of rain, the event will move to the Ocean Pines Community Center
