SEAFORD, Del.- Code Purple shelters provide a warm place to sleep during the winter months for the less fortunate. The Love in the Name of Christ organization, also known as Love Inc, runs all Code Purple shelters in Sussex County. The organizations says many Sussex County locations are in need of overnight volunteers. While all volunteers are important, overnight volunteers help the shelters run during their most crucial time of need. The organizations says the shelters in need of overnight volunteers are those in Milford, Seaford, and Georgetown.
Giovanni Otero, the Neighbor Engagement Director for Love Inc, says the shelters would not be able to operate without overnight volunteers. Otero says donating a night of your time could save the lives of people in need of shelter during the cold winter months.
"What I often try to tell people is that it's us giving up a night in our home is the difference for one particular shelter keeping up to 14 people alive for the night because they're not out in the cold," said Otero.
In Sussex County, Code Purple locations are open from December 1st to March 15th, no matter the temperature outside. Otero says making the less fortunate feel cared for is a simple task that is incredibly rewarding.
"They're extremely grateful for the sense of they matter and that their lives matter, and you know someone gave up a night, even if they work so that I could have a warm place to sleep at night" said Otereo.
Those interested in volunteering can sign up on the Love Inc mid Delmarva website.
