SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Nearly 800 students from across Delaware gathered at Clayton Hall at the University of Delaware on April 8 and 9 for the Delaware Technology Student Association State Leadership Conference, a major annual event promoting STEM education and leadership. The conference gave students a platform to showcase their talents in science, technology, engineering and math through competitions, workshops and career exploration opportunities.
Schools from Sussex County brought home numerous awards, demonstrating strong performance in a variety of STEM categories.
Indian River High School stood out by earning top-three rankings in 15 competition categories. The school claimed first place in Biotechnology Design and Debating Technological Issues, along with a second place finish in Coding, Engineering Design, and Geospatial Technology. Additional achievements included third place awards in Digital Photography and Extemporaneous Speech.
Along with Indian River High School, Sussex Central High School took home first place in Fashion Design and Technology. Delmar High School won first place in the Technology Bowl. Cape Henlopen High School earned both first and third place awards in On-Demand Video and qualified for nationals in Fashion Design and Technology. Selbyville Middle School claimed first and second place honors in System Control Technology, and second place in Children’s Stories, showcasing the emerging talent of younger students.
Gerald Sheridan of Indian River High School and Laura Barnas of John Singer Middle School were named Advisors of the Year, recognized for their outstanding commitment to student development and leadership in STEM fields.
