Students, athletes and community members gathered at Cape Henlopen High School this weekend to support Morgan’s Message.

LEWES, Del. - Students, athletes and community members gathered at Cape Henlopen High School this weekend to support Morgan’s Message, a national nonprofit working to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health in student-athletes.

Family and friends created Morgan’s Message to honor her legacy and raise awareness of the mental health challenges athletes face.

The organization was founded in 2020, one year after the death of Morgan Rodgers, a Duke University lacrosse player who died by suicide in July 2019 after battling mental health struggles. Family and friends created Morgan’s Message to honor her legacy and raise awareness of the mental health challenges athletes face.

This is Cape Henlopen’s third year having an event to help spread that message. “They need to reach out. That’s the most important part — finding somebody to talk to.” said Jeffrey Jablon, a member of the Morgan’s Message national committee.

“We are trying to focus on the younger group of children and sports — and try to get them to learn about mental health,” Jablon said.

Norah Block, a junior at Cape High School and a member of the field hockey team, knows firsthand the pressure that comes with juggling academics, athletics and a social life.

“It can be really hard in school to balance your academics, your social life and your sport,” she said. “So really just, you know, being there for people to reach out for help when they need it.”
