SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. — The Sussex County Lifesaving Association has won the United States Lifesaving Association’s national championship for the third consecutive year, continuing a run of success for Delaware’s beach patrols.
Sussex County finished first in the USLA’s largest chapter division with 1,563.748 points, well ahead of the California State Lifeguard Association, which finished second with 1,289.748 points. The division includes chapters with more than 200 active lifeguards.
The Sussex County team also led the competition in total open-division points, finishing with 1,389.748 points among 128 registered competitors.
The association includes lifeguards from beach patrols stretching from Lewes to Fenwick Island. Competitors take part in events designed to test real-world lifesaving skills, including surf rescue, board rescue and other beach and ocean rescue techniques.
Sussex County's latest championship adds to a recent streak of success. The team won its first USLA national title in 2024 after finishing second the previous year.
The USLA National Surf Lifesaving Championships bring together lifeguards from across the country to compete in events that emphasize fitness, rescue skills and teamwork.
