DELMARVA - After a damp start, Sussex County is on track for improving weather just in time for Mother’s Day weekend.
Rain will linger into early Friday as a coastal low slowly lifts northeastward, continuing to spread occasional showers across the region through the morning hours. Some elevated instability may still spark a rumble of thunder, but no severe weather is expected. Rain will gradually taper from south to north Friday evening as the system pulls away.
Behind the departing low, winds will pick up Friday night and into Saturday. A tightening pressure gradient will generate gusty west to northwest winds, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph at times during the day Saturday. Despite the breeze, drier air will move in, leading to gradually clearing skies.
By early Saturday, rain will have exited the region, leaving behind a mix of sun and clouds and seasonably cool conditions. Temperatures will climb into the upper 60s to low 70s across inland Sussex County, while coastal areas may remain a few degrees cooler due to a developing sea breeze.
The outlook for early Sunday morning and the start of Mother’s Day is promising. High pressure will dominate the area, bringing lighter winds and a clear, dry air mass. Overnight lows Saturday into Sunday will dip into the upper 40s to low 50s, with Sunday morning beginning sunny and mild — ideal for early celebrations and outdoor plans.
