DELMARVA -- After warm and mostly cloudy conditions and highs climbing to between 74 and 80 degrees inland and 68 to 74 along the coast temperatures gradually fall through the afternoon and evening. While most of the day will remain dry, a spotty shower or isolated rumble of thunder cannot be ruled out. The real change, however, begins Sunday night.
Steadier rain moves in overnight Sunday through Monday morning, becoming heavy at times.
A cold front pushing through the region late Sunday into Sunday night, in combination with a wave of low pressure, will bring steadier rain into the area. Periods of rain could become locally heavy at times into Monday morning, with most locations expected to receive between 0.75 and 1.50 inches, and locally higher amounts possible in heavier bands.
Temperatures Sunday night will dip into the mid to upper 40s, and Monday will usher in a notable cool-down. Highs are expected to struggle to reach the low to mid-50s, with rain continuing in the morning and drying gradually working in from the west by afternoon. Though a secondary cold front passes through late Monday night, it likely brings little to no additional rainfall.
By Tuesday, a strong upper-level trough will help usher in a much colder air mass. Daytime highs across Delmarva will only reach the 40s, and with northwest winds gusting between 25 and 35 mph, it will feel significantly colder. Dew points in the teens and widespread low temperatures in the low to mid-30s will likely lead to a Freeze Warning for areas where the growing season has started—though dry, windy conditions should prevent frost from forming.
Could see FREEZE WARNINGS issued Tuesday night into Wednesday morning with lows expected to fall into the upper 20s away from the coast.
Tuesday night is expected to be even colder, with most of Delmarva dipping below freezing once again.
Wednesday will remain chilly and dry, with highs near 50 degrees and lighter winds as high pressure builds over the region. Clear skies and below-freezing dew points could set the stage for another night of freeze or frost concerns—especially in calm wind conditions.
By Thursday, temperatures begin a gradual rebound as the high shifts offshore. However, another low-pressure system is forecast to approach Delmarva by Friday, bringing a renewed chance for showers. Temperatures will continue to moderate to near seasonal averages ahead of the system as southerly winds return.
